The 4th Annual Shane Drury “Keeping the Faith/True Grit Award” is presented annually here at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo to a selected person who has kept Faith and continued living life with Grit despite hardship.

The winner will receive a bronze sculpted by Mavis Madison and Sponsored by: Black Hills Bronze's Grant and Kristan Standard.

The Bronze is of Shane on the bull 409 Orleans at Greeley CO where he was 83 points.

Shane Graduated, across the street, from Central High School in 1997. He was an Inspiration to many throughout his life. As a bull rider he conquered beast after beast in the rodeo arena. Perhaps that prepared him for the battle that would eventually take him from this earth.

Shane’s determination in the area served him well as he beat the disease once and returned to competition with Gortex patches filling his chest wall where ribs had been removed. Round one of Ewing’s Sarcoma started in May of 2002, included 15 chemo treatments and surgery to remove the tumor as well as parts of four ribs and a piece of his lung. In 2003, Doctors believed him to be cancer free. Shane came back to the arena first as a competitor and after being diagnosed a second time with Ewing’s Sarcoma he returned as a judge. Through everything, he kept a positive attitude, was very well known for his perseverance and Strong Faith!

He was on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University men’s rodeo team that won the national championship in 1999 and 2000. In 2000, he made the trip to Las Vegas to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He won the prestigious Reno rodeo in 2001 while setting the area record of 95 points! He just missed qualifying for the NFR that year finishing the season 19th place. He was making a bid to get back to the Wrangler NFR and was having back pain. When tests revealed that the pain was coming from a tumor, Drury faced that just as he faced every bull he ever got on with determination that he would come out on top. He did that to the end with a smile on his face. In 2006 cancer took Shane from this earth but cancer never got the best of Shane Drury, he save that for all the people that knew him!

This Year’s recipient of the Bronze is Nate Morrison from Interior, SD. In 1998 Nate Morrison broke his neck in a saddle bronc riding accident at the rodeo in White River, SD leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. It will be going on 12 years from that day and Nate has refused to let it keep him from being involved in the sport he loves! He is currently living in Interior, SD where he and his Dad, Dave Morrison, have been raising bucking horses, bulls and produce the Badlands Invitational Bronc Riding and Contractors Match in August held in Kadoka, SD.

Nate also is the creator, owner, and operator of the Breeder’s Connection dot com, an online auction site offering the most sought after bucking bull genetics in rodeo with over 3,000 bucking stock breeders from the United States and Canada as members.

Receiving the Shane Drury “Keeping the Faith/True Grit Award” is a huge honor for Nate and his family as Shane, Chad and Jesse Drury have always held a special place in their heart. They remember when Shane and Chad were in high school, they would travel 90 miles to the Morrison’s ranch every week to climb on practice bulls rain or shine.

Nate not only has kept the Faith, but he looks for every opportunity to be able to share the Faith he has in Jesus Christ. Something that Shane did all the way to his home going.

Congratulations Nate! I'm very proud to call you my friend!

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
